Taking Care of Yourself after an Extraction

Tooth Extractions | Farmington NM Dentist

Although tooth extraction is generally a last resort for most dentists, in some cases it is necessary. If that is the case for you, make sure you follow your Farmington, NM dentist’s instructions carefully when it comes to dental extractions so the healing process goes smoothly.

Here is a list of how you should take of yourself and the extraction site after you have a tooth pulled.

Controlling the Pain after an Extraction

Post-extraction, you will likely experience some tenderness at the site. This is usually more uncomfortable than painful and should be gone in a few days.

Unless you have had a more complex procedure, your dentist will probably recommend over-the-counter pain relievers. Avoid taking aspirin as that might cause the wound to bleed more.

Encouraging Clot Formation after an Extraction

Because a scab cannot form in your mouth, mouth wounds bleed more. When mixed with saliva, it might look like there is more blood than there actually is. Pressure will help a blood clot form at the site, which will help to reduce the bleeding.

Once that clot forms at the extraction site, it’s important not to disturb it. Follow these guidelines to help keep the clot in place:

  • Avoid drinking anything hot
  • Do not smoke
  • Eat only soft foods
  • Do not drink alcohol
  • Avoid spitting
  • Do not use a straw
  • Rest and avoid exercise
  • Elevate your head

After the initial 24-hour time period, you can gently rinse your mouth up to four times a day, particularly after eating. This will help keep the extraction site free of debris and help ward off infection.

If the pain doesn’t continue to lessen each day, call your dentist.
